It's hard to fork over our hard-earned cash to the tax-man, but at least you know that you're getting vital services in return. There are many ins and outs and intricacies with income tax and it's imperative that you understand them.

Income tax, in a nutshell, is a tax that is charged on the earnings of all private individuals. There are varying types of tax setups around the world. Certain countries use a ‘flat tax' income tax system that charges all citizens the same rate proportionate to income. Alternatively, other countries or areas use a ‘progressive tax' income tax system that charges a higher rate for larger earners.

Federal income tax began being imposed as of 1862. It began as a 3% charge on salaries above $600 and then 5% on 10,000 and upwards. In modern times however, federal income tax has been, for the most part, replaced by flat and progressive tax income systems.

Everybody love's income tax returns, but the paperwork can be a bit cumbersome at the best of times. Getting your income tax return right first time obviously saves you a lot of time and will get your actual return to you quicker. There are many tax software programs available that, when used properly can take almost all the guesswork out of your income tax return. This kind of software can work everything out for you, using the information that you provide.

Income tax allowance is a provision in certain countries whereby people with disabilities can have amounts taken off their taxable amount thus putting them in a lower tax category, if any, and potentially saving them a lot of money. If a person is blind or over the age of 65 for example, they can apply to have a personal income tax allowance.

UK income tax is much the same as any other country's tax system. UK income tax works on the progressive income tax system meaning that the more you earn, the higher UK income tax bracket you fall into and the more income tax you'll pay each month.

To avoid problems, it's wise to be educated on what tax you must pay and when. Doing so puts you in good stead to receive tax returns etc.
