House insurance exclusions

Rather than making a claim in terms of your cheap home insurance policy and receiving the bad news that your claim will not be met, either partially or in full, make sure that you are aware of any exclusions which may apply to your house insurance policy.

The most common house insurance exclusions pertain to wear and tear as far as the structure of your house is concerned. It is up to you, not your house insurance provider, to keep your house in a good state of repair, and if you make a claim in respect of damage to your house and your house insurance provider feels that part or all of the claim could have been avoided if your house had been maintained more efficiently, you may just find them refusing to pay a portion of, or the entire, house insurance claim amount. Other common exclusions include damage caused by your pets and intentional damage. Ordinarily a cheap home insurance policy will not cover damage or loss suffered if a property has been vacant for more than 30 days, although people travelling frequently for extended periods can usually negotiate extra house insurance cover in exchange for increased premiums. Most cheap home insurance providers will also require you to meet the first part of your house insurance claim, known as the 'excess'. The amount of excess you pay will depend on who you hold a house insurance policy with and what section of the house insurance policy you are claiming on.
